WhatsApp Number Formats: Country Codes, E.164 and What Breaks

Direct answer: Store every number in E.164 format: a plus sign, the country code, then the subscriber number, with no spaces, dashes or brackets — for example +919876543210. Drop the national trunk prefix (the leading 0 in India or the UK) when you add a country code, because keeping both produces a number that cannot be dialled internationally and will not match on a duplicate check.
WhatsApp Number Formats: Country Codes, E.164 and What Breaks — LeadSync

Phone number formatting looks like a cosmetic detail until it quietly breaks three things at once: dialling from abroad, duplicate detection, and WhatsApp matching the contact to an account. All three failures have the same root cause, and one rule fixes all of them.

The one format worth using: E.164

E.164 is the ITU's international numbering standard, and it is what every serious system stores internally — Google Contacts, WhatsApp, Twilio, every CRM. The structure is deliberately boring:

The rule in one line: + then country code then the number, with the leading 0 dropped. +919876543210, not +91 09876 543210.

The leading-zero mistake

This is the single most common formatting error, and it is worth understanding rather than memorising. Many countries use a trunk prefix — usually 0 — in front of a number when dialling it domestically. It is a dialling instruction, not part of the number. When you move to international format, the country code *replaces* that prefix:

The trunk prefix is replaced by the country code, not added to it.
CountryWritten domesticallyCorrect international formCommon mistake
India (+91)098765 43210+919876543210+91098765 43210
UK (+44)07911 123456+447911123456+4407911123456
Germany (+49)0151 23456789+4915123456789+49015123456789
Australia (+61)0412 345 678+61412345678+610412345678
USA (+1)(415) 555-2671+14155552671+1 (415) 555-2671
Italy (+39)06 1234567+39061234567Dropping the 0 — Italy keeps it.

The trunk prefix is replaced by the country code, not added to it.

Italy is the exception worth knowing: its landline leading zero is part of the number and must be kept. If you work across many countries, let a tool apply the rules rather than doing it per row.

What a badly formatted number actually breaks

Consequences of storing numbers without a country code or with separators.
SymptomWhy it happens
Calls fail when you or the contact travelsWithout a country code the device guesses your current country's code, which is wrong as soon as either party moves.
Duplicate contacts that will not mergeGoogle matches numbers as strings. 9876543210 and +919876543210 are different strings, so no merge is suggested. How to fix an address book in this state.
WhatsApp shows a number instead of your saved nameThe saved contact's number does not resolve to the same account identity, so WhatsApp has nothing to match and falls back to the raw number.
A CSV import silently mangles numbersSpreadsheets treat a number-looking cell as a number, strip the leading + or 0, and may convert long values to scientific notation. Formatting the text before importing avoids it.
Click-to-chat links do not openA wa.me link requires digits only, with the country code and no + or separators.

The spreadsheet trap, specifically

If you are moving numbers through a CSV at any point, this is the failure that catches most people: open the file in a spreadsheet and +919876543210 becomes 919876543210, while a long number may render as 9.19877E+11 and lose digits permanently. Format the column as text before anything else, or avoid the round-trip altogether by writing contacts directly rather than importing a file.

Click-to-chat links are the exception to the + rule. A wa.me URL takes the full international number as digits only:

How LeadSync handles formats

Because WhatsApp Web does not always render a number with its country code, a saver has to decide what to do with a bare national number. LeadSync's behaviour:

Save correctly formatted numbers from the start

LeadSync normalises and country-codes every number it saves to Google Contacts, which is far less work than fixing the formats later. First 35 contacts free.

Frequently asked questions

What is E.164 format?

E.164 is the ITU standard for international phone numbers: a plus sign, the country calling code, then the national subscriber number, with no separators and a maximum of 15 digits in total. +919876543210 and +14155552671 are both valid E.164 numbers.

Should I keep the leading zero when I add a country code?

No. The leading zero is a national trunk prefix used only for domestic dialling, and it is replaced by the country code rather than added to it. +91 09876543210 is wrong; +919876543210 is right. Italy is the notable exception, where the leading zero on landlines is part of the number itself.

Does WhatsApp need the country code to match a contact?

WhatsApp identifies accounts by full international number. A contact stored without a country code can still match while you and the contact are in the same country, because the device fills in the local code, but it stops matching reliably as soon as either of you travels or changes SIM.

What format does LeadSync save numbers in?

LeadSync normalises each number it reads and saves it with the country code, which is also what its duplicate check compares against. You set the expected country before a run so that numbers rendered without a code are attributed correctly.
